Welcome to Term 3
We hope our school families had a safe and wonderful July holiday break and we’ve warmly welcomed all back to a new start for Term 3.
A number of new families have arrived and have joined our school community so a welcome to you too.
Over last few mornings students have created a variety of rockets and space related chalk drawings under our big moon in the forecourt and it has been a delight to see their creativity and engagement before school.
Congratulations Elle
Last week Elle competed in the Sunshine Coast 10-12 Athletics Trials at the University track. Elle competes in the Multi-Event (100m, Long Jump, Shot Put and 800m) and she was an outstanding competitor to secure a first place in the event for 12 year old girls.
Elle will now compete in mid August at QSAC in Brisbane at the State Championship.
Three big cheers for Elle and I look forward to seeing her compete in Brisbane and cheering her on, on behalf of our school community.
School Band
Our school band has come a long way with eager students and the encouraging Mr Buckley. On Monday’s parade the students performed for the first time in front of an audience and on the big stage.
It was wonderful to hear and watch the band play their three songs and we wish them all the best for a successful concert in a few week’s time at Matthew Flinders.
A great job done by all students and three cheers to you too!
Free Dress Day
Last Friday $205.85 was raised in our fund raising efforts. Thank you for contributing to this effort and the funds are going to the 2019 Vinnies Community Sleepout Sunshine Coast.
Mrs Pool and I are actively joining this fundraiser and will sleep out on Maroochydore Beach on Thursday August 8 as a part of this activity.

21/07/1969
As part of the 50th anniversary of the landing on the moon we had a busy week of science activities.
- Year 3 to Year 6 visiting the planetarium in the Hall and enjoyed a variety of shows as they whizzed around the solar system
- Prep to Year 6 also met in the Hall to be amazed by the Street Science presentation which engaged the students in all things in science as an astronaut.
- All classes were given an art creativity challenge around the moon, a footprint and the number 50.

Early Childhood Development Programs (ECDPs)
ECDP funding extended beyond 2020
Funding for ECDPs will continue beyond 2020. The Queensland Government announced the continued funding in the State Budget on 11 June 2019. Our school has also received an ECDP Great Start Grant. The grant provides an opportunity for us to work collaboratively with our parents, National Disability Insurance Scheme Early Childhood Early Intervention (NDIS ECEI) providers, kindy services and local schools to build on good practice so that children attending our ECDP are able to make the best possible transition to school.
Great news! The ECDP funding will continue beyond 2020. The funding was announced in the State Budget on 11 June 2019.
Term 4 – Looking Ahead - Swimming
IN late Term 4 prep to Year 5 students will undertake swimming sessions at Cotton Tree Pool and our Year 6 students will head to Mooloolaba Beach for Surf Awareness sessions.
The details are being confirmed and booked now and a note shall be sent home shortly with all details and costings.
School Opinion Survey
Shortly the 2019 School Opinion Survey will be sent home. We urge all parents to reflectively complete the survey online promptly. Please make contact with the office if you require access to a computer in the Library to complete the survey.
In anticipation, we thank you for your support and completion of the survey.
The data is used by staff to guide our priorities and actions to support our school teaching and learning plans.
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability
Collecting data on school students with disability helps teachers, principals and education authorities support the participation of students with disability in schooling on the same basis as students without disability.
All Australian Governments have agreed to work together on the annual collection of data on school students with disability. All Australian schools participate in this annual data collection. The data provided to the Australian Government is aggregated data only. While only data that cannot identify your child will be submitted outside of the Department, if you do not wish for your child’s details to be included, please let me know.
Please be reassured that the Department will not provide on to another organisation any data that can identify an individual student. The only data being collected at the school level to be reported nationally is the:
- number of students in the school who are provided with an adjustment to address a disability;
- level of adjustments we provide for those students and
- a broad category of disability.
Consultation with parents is important not only for the data collection but also to ensure you are aware of the adjustments being provided to support your child. We will therefore continue to consult with you.
Please remember data gathered cannot identify your child however, if you do not wish for your child’s details to be included, please let me know.
Information and fact sheets are available to help you make decision from the:
- Department’s website:
https://www.nccd.edu.au/for-parents-guardians-and-carers
- Australian Government Department of Education website:
http://education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability
Alternatively, if you have any queries about the collection or use of this data I encourage you to contact me directly.
Read to children every day
Parents and carers who read aloud to their children every day provide a strong, positive influence and help develop a life-long love of reading.
There are a number of things you can do to foster your child’s love of reading:
- read aloud to young children every day, if only for a few minutes, and let them hold the book and turn the pages
- visit the library as a family and let your child select books that interest them
- engage older children and teens in discussions and debates about the books or magazines they are reading

Contact Details – Do we have your most up to date contact details?
There are times when we may need to contact parents and carers. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on 5475 1555 so we can update our records. These details include parent/carers’ name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details change.
Staffing News
Mr Maish will be taking leave across week 6, 7 and 8 of this term. Mrs Pool will work with Mr Leis in the Office.
Mid way through next term Miss Clelland is returning from her time in England and she will fulfil a number of roles across the remainder of the year.
Bullying No Way
Maroochydore State School is participating in the annual Bullying, No Way programme this year.
We continually remind our students to speak nicely and respectfully at all times as we know that name calling and teasing is not positive or helpful in promoting a happy learning environment.
From time to time some children have disagreements with other children in the playground. Teachers are very present in the playground and can act immediately to assist students and guide them to a positive and supported outcome. Class teachers can then also assist by doing check ins with both the student and their parents in an ongoing approach.
Teachers, Mrs Pool and I spend a lot of time listening to all sides of an incident, being reflective with students and then supporting all students in aiming to be safe, confident and reflective.
Pikki Street Building Construction
Shortly, work will commence on the vacant block of land next door to the school in Pikki Street. Around safety for students, parents and staff, the gate access and access road for the teacher’s carpark will be closed off during the construction period.
Students and parents will be asked to access the school via the access pathway into the Prep and ECDP and to follow the path up to the primary school building areas. The reverse procedure will occur in the afternoon with students and parents exiting the school at the Prep and ECDP access gate.
The mango tree playgrounds will be closed, as will the one on the oval, with safety for all in mind around the construction period.
Uniform Shop
Please note the changed operating times. Monday c. 8:00am – c. 8:20am |
School Learning Times
Classrooms open at 8:20am every school day. This allows time for students to unpack their bags, come in and get their learning space organised.
This ensures all students are organised and ready to start learning at 8:30am every school day.
Please note after 8:45am, if students and parents are running a little bit late you BOTH must come to the Office for a late slip as ONLY the parent is required to give a reason for the lateness.
The Sky Above – It’s all about the 50th Anniversary of Landing on the Moon
Here’s what we learned from Apollo 11.
Apollo 11 returned with some 22kg of moon rocks and lunar dust :
- The lunar surface is solid
- The moon is covered with regolith
- Dust mattered
- The moon has a crust, mantle and core like earth
- The moon is ancient, and its craters are, too
- The moon’s rock is lifeless
- The moon is moving away from Earth
- The solar winds change
