Nambour Show Holiday
All families please note that this Friday , June 14, is a local show holiday and as such there is no school this Friday for our students.
Early Childhood Development Programs (ECDPs)
ECDP funding extended beyond 2020
Funding for ECDPs will continue beyond 2020. The Queensland Government announced the continued funding in the State Budget on 11 June 2019. Our school has also received an ECDP Great Start Grant. The grant provides an opportunity for us to work collaboratively with our parents, National Disability Insurance Scheme Early Childhood Early Intervention (NDIS ECEI) providers, kindy services and local schools to build on good practice so that children attending our ECDP are able to make the best possible transition to school.
Great news! The ECDP funding will continue beyond 2020. The funding was announced in the State Budget on 11 June 2019.
Writing Competition
Wow and fabulous to Scoute (Yr6), Jessica (Yr6) and Nate (Yr6) for being our writing award winners in the EXPLORE budding writer’s competition.
These student are now off to the University of Sunshine Coast to engage in a writing workshop with the author - Dr Maria Arena on Tuesday.
District Athletics
Congratulations to our students who participated last week at the University of Sunshine Coast in the Nambour District Athletics Trial. For our students this is often their first experience of competing on a tartan track and competing against a number of other talented students from other schools. A number of pleasing results were achieved and this was topped off by Elle O (Yr 6) winning the 12 year girl age championship. We all wish her well competing in the Regional Athletics Trial in July.
Fun Run June 27
At Monday’s P&C meeting we have decided to postpone the Fun Run until the last week of school (Sept 19) in Term 3. The earth works on the ovals across the road have not been completed due to the wet weather and in the interests of the safety of all, and to allow us full access to our course we have delayed the event until September.
Semester Reports
During Week 10 of this term your child’s semester report shall be emailed to you. We are planning for this to be emailed to you on June 27 after your school drop off and this process may take some time across the day. If you haven’t received your child’s report please contact us on the Friday morning – June 28.
Again, all parents are encouraged to make time early next term to meet with your child’s teacher and discuss not only the report but what goals are being set for improvement and learning across Semester Two.
MSHS Enrolments – Yr 6 into Yr 7 2020
All parents of students in Year 6 at Maroochydore State School – urgent action required – enrolments for Yr 7 2020 at MSHS are due on June 20 to MSHS.
Bullying No Way
Maroochydore State School is participating in the annual Bullying, No Way programme this year.
We continually remind our students to speak nicely and respectfully at all times as we know that name calling and teasing is not positive or helpful in promoting a happy learning environment.
From time to time some children have disagreements with other children in the playground. Teachers are very present in the playground and can act immediately to assist students and guide them to a positive and supported outcome. Class teachers can then also assist by doing check ins with both the student and their parents in an ongoing approach.
Teachers, Mrs Pool and I spend a lot of time listening to all sides of an incident, being reflective with students and then supporting all students in aiming to be safe, confident and reflective.
Pikki Street Building Construction
Shortly, work will commence on the vacant block of land next door to the school in Pikki Street. Around safety for students, parents and staff, the gate access and access road for the teacher’s carpark will be closed off during the construction period.
Students and parents will be asked to access the school via the access pathway into the Prep and ECDP and to follow the path up to the primary school building areas. The reverse procedure will occur in the afternoon with students and parents exiting the school at the Prep and ECDP access gate.
The mango tree playgrounds will be closed, as will the one on the oval, with safety for all in mind around the construction period.
Uniform Shop
Please note the changed operating times.
Monday c. 8:00am – c. 8:20am
School Learning Times
As it is the start of a new year it is also a good time to remind everyone about being prepared for the school learning day.
Remember classrooms at open at 8:20am at the latest every school day. This allows time for students to unpack their bags, come in and get their learning space organised.
This ensures all students are organised and ready to start learning at 8:30am every school day.
Please note after 8:45am, if students and parents are running a little bit late you BOTH must come to the Office for a late slip as ONLY the parent is required to give a reason for the lateness.
The Sky Above – It’s all about the 50th Anniversary of Landing on the Moon
With thanks to the Australian Space Agency
Fun fact 1: A mineral found in Moon rocks brought back by Apollo 11 was named “Armalcolite” after Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins
Fun fact 2: The first known story of a voyage to the Moon was a satire called Vera Historia (True History), written around 160CE by Lucian of Samosata
Fun fact 3: When Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei used the newly-invented telescope to observe the Noon, he thought that the dark areas on the surface were seas. That’s why the region where Apollo 11 landed is called the Sea of Tranquility
Fun fact 4: Buzz Aldrin’s mother was born Marion Moon
Fun fact 5: At 111 metres tall, the Saturn V Moon rocket that launched Apollo 11 was about the height of a 36 storey building
Fun fact 6: Prior to the Moon landings some scientists believed that the lunar surface was covered in dust so deep that a landing spacecraft would sink into it and disappear
Fun fact 7: You can see our largest planet in tonight’s sky - Jupiter. Jupiter (Greek Zeus) was the king of the Roman gods and father of the god Apollo.
Fun fact 8: Apollo 11 Command Module Pilot Michael Collins was born in Rome where his father was a Military Attache at the US Embassy.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
Every day counts
Term 1 Whole School Student Attendance Rate – 90.9%
Our whole school target is 94%
Best year level attendance: Prep and closely followed by Year 6.
Parents are reminded of the importance of sending children to school every day. Being at school every day is important, with one day absent each week quickly adding up to two months of missed lessons in a year.
Unless your child is ill, it is expected that your child will be at school learning every day of the school year.
We have 4 school rules. Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful and Be a Learner.
