Welcome to the hidden gem of Maroochydore – Maroochydore State School

Maroochydore State School Staff

All staff wish students and their families a happy and safe holiday period after a longer term 2. We look forward to seeing all students refreshed, recharged and ready for new learning on Monday July 16.

Nambour District Athletics

Congratulations to the following students who achieved the qualifying standards to be selected in the MSS Athletics team to compete at the University of the Sunshine Coast athletics track on Tuesday August 7.

Mia, Chloe, Amalee, Bianca, Ellie, Leah and Nikola.
Aiden, Elijah, Morgan, Tyson, Dominic, Warren, Levi, Callum and Mak.

All forms and the $5 competition levy need to be returned by Monday.

Science Week – Street Science Show

As part of our Science Week activities we have invited Street Science to visit our school on August 15 to conduct 2 shows.

Prep to Year 2 from 8:40am, and
Year 3 to Year 6 from 9:45.

As part of the fun of the show we encourage all students to come dressed as a scientist or science related character.

As we are having the two shows we welcome parents to also come along and be a part of the audience. To ensure we have a seat for you please call the Office (5475 1555) and reserve your seat.

Evans Street Traffic Lights

All students were reminded on Parade about making sure they cross Evans Street using the pedestrian lights safely and correctly. This follows an eye-witness account of one of our students putting themselves in great danger as they crossed Evans Street. Could all parents please also follow up on this with a safe road crossing reminder at home?

P&C Fun Run Fundraising

Congratulations to Kimberley (Year 3LS) who was the highest fundraiser for our fun run this year. Kimberley raised some $275 – sensational and an amazing response. Thank you Kimberley!

Lunar Eclipse – early Saturday

Do make sure you get outside and have a look as we will be treated to a Blood Moon and a total lunar eclipse, as the Earth passes between the Sun and Moon early Saturday morning.

A lunar eclipse will begin about 3:15am on Saturday July 28 with the moon appearing to darken and gradually turn red from about 5:30am. The red colour is coming from the light that skims through our atmosphere and heads off into space.

The full eclipse will last about one hour and 43 minutes with the entire spectacle of the moon being affected by the shadow to last for about 6 hours.

I think this would be an ideal time to be an astronaut on the moon as you would see a total solar eclipse as the Earth would be blocking the Sun and have an appearance of a ring of fire.

Plus….

Mars will move into opposition, meaning that it and the sun will be on directly opposite sides of Earth, making it appear even redder than usual and currently from here Mars rises in the east just as the sun sets in the west, and then sets in the west just as the sun rises in the east.

A wonderful time to be out and about exploring our night sky!

MSHS Enrolment for Year 7 2019

Maroochydore State High School for Year 7 2019 – students must be enrolled prior to attending the upcoming transition days.

All forms/paperwork is due to the high school now.

Voluntary Financial Contribution

Thank you to the those parents who have already paid this year’s voluntary financial contribution. As mentioned in the letter being sent home today these funds enhance and add to the resources available in each classroom including the art and craft supplies and keeping our IT updated. Could all parents please consider contributing the $70 ASAP.

Contact Details – Do we have your most up to date contact details?

There are times when we may need to contact parents and carers. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on 5475 1555 so we can update our records. These details include parent/carers’ name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details change.

Staff Car Park Area

BE Safe – is one of our 4 school rules.

Could all parents and students ensure they DO NOT use the staff car park area as a thoroughfare or a place for dropping off or picking children up from.

Routines and Expectations

Wearing the correct school uniform including a broad brimmed hat for play times.

All students should be dropped off at school from 8:20 to 8:30am.

School learning starts at 8:30am sharp.

There are high expectations around student work, personal achievements and behaviour.

For any student absence please call the school before 8:30am on the day of the absence. 5475 1555

Our 4 School Rules are:

Be Respectful

Be Responsible

Be Safe

Be a Learner

All student mobile phones are to be taken to the School Office for safe keeping during the school day. Students collect them at the end of the school teaching and learning day at 2:30pm.

Hats – all students should have a green bucket hat for outside activities including both breaks. Parents please ensure your child’s hat is named.

Toys – all students are to leave their toys at home for play at home and to not disrupt the teaching and learning of the teacher and other students.

Be Responsible

Please reinforce with your child the idea that we do not solve disagreements by being physical. That we use our words, walk away or seek a teacher to assist.

Rule: Be Responsible Buzz Phrase “I Choose to Defuse”

  • I say STOP if someone or something is upsetting me.
  • I WALK away from the situation to a safe place.
  • I TALK to someone I can trust.
  • I CONTROL myself and keep my COOL.
  • I can solve problems in a calm manner.

Resilience in this context means that students need to take responsibility for their own actions. Regardless of what bad things we experience or others may do to us we are still responsible for how we react. It is not acceptable to justify our inappropriate behaviour as a result of someone else’s behaviour towards us.

School Absence and Text Messaging Service

A reminder:

If your student is absent - Phone the Student Absence Line before 9:00am to advise of any/all occasions when your child/ren will be away from school. This is a 24hr recorded service, you can call it anytime (convenient if your child is up ill during the night!). The Maroochydore State School Student Absence Line number is 07 5475 1555 – then dial 2 and leave clearly state your child’s name class and a reason for your child’s absence.

If/when you receive an SMS message, reply to the SMS with the reason for your child’s absence and their name immediately OR if you believe your child/ren is/should be at school contact the school office immediately to notify us.

Playground Use

It is great to see students and families enjoy the wonderful facilities and playgrounds straight after school. However, I need all of the community to please support this practice in the following way.

If students are to use the playground after school, their parent must be actively supervising their child from right next to the playground.

I appreciate everyone’s support with this.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Every day counts

Semester 1 Whole School Student Attendance Rate – 88.0%
Our whole school target is 94%

Parents are reminded of the importance of sending children to school every day. Being at school every day is important, with one day absent each week quickly adding up to two months of missed lessons in a year.

Unless your child is ill, it is expected that your child will be at school learning every day of the school year.

By sending your child to school every day we are together developing good habits for success at primary school and beyond. When parents do not support developing a solid routine of attending school every day issues of truancy and poor work habits can emerge.
