Term 2 Dates

All parents please note school resumes for Term 2 on Tuesday April 17 with Friday June 29 being the last day of the term.

Easter Hat Parade

Thursday 8:45am in the main school Hall.

Prep to Year 3 students are invited to create an Easter hat, including ears and a carrot, and come along with their class on Thursday morning at 8:45am to the Hall.

Year 4 – 6 students are invited to create an Easter hat, including ears and a carrot, and come along to the Hall on Thursday morning at 8:45am with Mr Habel.

A busy time in our school

Recent events:

  • Harmony Day – did you see our fantastic Harmony Day display on the school front lawn? All students created a self-portrait, which was laminated and randomly placed onto the lawn and in front of the magnificent banner which was created by Mrs Blackburn and painted with the help of students.
  • Anti-Bullying Day – We at Maroochydore SS believe strongly, along with our parents, in putting a stop to bullying and use constant reminders about being positive and supportive to all in all situations. All children were given a wrist band as another pro-active reminder.
  • World Science Fair in Brisbane – 23 eager students visited the World Science Fair last Thursday at the QLD Museum. This was a wonderful day of fossil exploring, viewing the museum displays and exploring a number of scientific perception challenges.
  • School Leaders – joined the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games competitors for a bowling demonstration at Maroochydore Bowls Club. I hear a number of our students were ‘on target’ whilst some had ‘no idea’ where the bowl was going. Our celebration banner for the Isle of Man featuring Borobi was a hit, naturally!
  • Our Year 5 and 6 students completed a first for our school by participating in a CPR course. What a wonderful activity to participate in and a vital skill to have knowledge about at such a young age.
  • Parent teacher interviews – these have been held over the last two weeks and it’s been wonderful to see so many parents find the time to discuss their child’s progress with the class teacher. One class has had nearly every parent come in – a positive and supportive link between the class teachers and parents.
  • Did you know our entire, wonderful teaching staff attended a full day Numeracy PD last Saturday week? This was an outstanding day of professional development for all teachers and will further enhance the engaging work Mrs Skehan and Mr Habel are doing across all classrooms with students and the class teachers.

NAPLAN Online

The tests are scheduled for Tuesday May 15, Wednesday May 16 and Thursday May 17 for our Year 3 and Year 5 students.

Year 5 students will complete each test online – Writing, Reading, Language Conventions, Grammar and Punctuation and Numeracy.

Year 3 students will complete a paper version of the Writing test and then online for the Reading, Language Conventions, Grammar and Punctuation and Numeracy.

This is a 24hr recorded service, you can call it anytime (convenient if your child is up ill during the night!). Playground Use

It is great to see students and families enjoy the wonderful facilities and playgrounds straight after school. However, I need all of the community to please support this practice in the following way.

If students are to use the playground after school, their parent must be actively supervising their child from right next to the playground.

I appreciate everyone’s support with this.

Chappy Sam

Chappy Sam is here on a Monday and Thursday again this year. All parents and students are invited to catch up with Chappy Sam in her room or to make an appointment please ring the Office 5475 1555

Breakfast Club – on a Monday and a Thursday with toast and a drink.

Students and families are welcome to come to the main forecourt area from 8:00am. and join in the Breakfast Club social start to the day.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Every day counts

Parents are reminded of the importance of sending children to school every day. Being at school every day is important, with one day absent each week quickly adding up to two months of missed lessons in a year.

Unless your child is ill, it is expected that your child will be at school learning every day of the school year.

More information on the importance of regular school attendance is available at the link below. The videos associated with this link highlight issues often faced by parents and dispel some myths about absences form school and are worth a look.

http://education.qld.gov.au/everydaycounts/index.html

By sending your child to school every day we are together developing good habits for success at primary school and beyond. When parents do not support developing a solid routine of attending school every day issues of truancy and poor work habits can emerge.

If you have any concerns regarding your child’s attendance, please do not hesitate to contact the school for support.

This week’s rules of the week is – Be Safe.

At Parade on Monday we reminded students about being safe across the upcoming holiday period so that everyone returns safe and sound from the Easter holiday.
